Part of the process of getting this political networking site up and running was to make sure the search engines could find it.
Without the ability for potential users to find the site, it is pretty much useless to put a site online. No search engine results means no visitors.
Using our own version of search engine optimization, the OFN site has reached and maintained top placement for a variety of political networking terms. This has been done without the need for tremendous numbers of inbound links from other sites, which are usually have the highest potential for advancement in search results. The problem with such links is that they often do more harm than good, so hundreds - if not thousands - of links must be created to point to a site before enough 'good links' are in place to outweigh the 'bad links'.
Since we used no inbound links, we can focus more on content and actual political networking tools as the determining factors when being indexed in search engines, instead of playing the internet game of 'who has the most links'.
Being in the top ten results for any major keyword search, such as political networking, is a difficult thing to achieve and even harder to maintain.
Since our launch a month ago, we reached the top ten in a variety of major search engines within days, and have maintained those positions ever since. Not by using overloads of links, or keyword spamming, or other less than realistic systems - but by providing an actual political networking site with the tools and substance that rates high search engine placement.
Now that we are convinced that our position in the search engine results is not a fluke, or an effect of some 'free high placement trial period' or 'birthday effect' that gets discussed in search engine optimization circles, we can focus on invitations for members and get to work on additional tools and resources for them.
Search engine placement is of major importance to any site, and we are happy that we have achieved our current rankings as quickly as we have.
